Cape Cod in the Summer
This time of year is typically when I go to the Cape!
I'm not there yet, so I'm a little antsy.
I've been going to the Cape since I was 7 months old. I missed one year of not getting there
and that was 2008. I'm not going to miss it again.
I especially just want to jump into the ocean, the waters of Nantucket Sound, or even the bay side.
It doesn't matter where, I just want to go, feel the water, the waves, the sun. I'd like to hear the seagulls and the kids playing in the water.
Every year my family went on vacation for two weeks growing up. We started going to Eastham, on the bay and it was awesome. The tides went out and kids could play baseball or rummage in the tide pools. When the tide came in, we'd go swimming. I remember the sand dunes, running up and down them and the sea grass blowing in the wind. My cousins, parents and grandparents would all be nearby.
When we were little, they had a target ship in Cape Cod Bay which was practice for bombing. At night, we would run to the top of the dune to watch them. On that same dune, we could pick wild black raspberries too.
The ship had a bunch of holes in it from all that practice. It was called the SS James Longstreet and apparently is still there, but not visible from the shores.
There was a place in Orleans called Cranberry Cove that had an impressive mini-golf course and a par three course for night time entertainment, of course a tourist shop too. We always or our parents always bought us Cape Cod sweatshirts with hoods. They were thick and of good quality, not like the flimsy ones that are made today.
After many years in Eastham, we then went to Dennisport on Nantucket Sound, our cottages, just a short walk to the water.
A vacation to me was about all our family was around and near us in neighboring cottages. I love the smell of the Cape Cod cottage, it just has that Cape air inside.
We went to the beach everyday if good weather, which usually this time of year is perfect. We'd come back for lunch, go back down to the beach, a family beach and then back home around late afternoon to get ready for supper.
We all gathered round at one of the cottages and would just relax, and eat and have fun. Some nights, we would go the Sunday School for home made ice cream, which was right down the streets. We met many wonderful neighbors in those years. There is nothing like the Cape Cod air to lull one to sleep and the sound of the waves on the shore. Cape Cod in July/August is just too perfect.

I think you hit it on the head. Don't forget lugging transitor radios around so that we could still hear our favorite summer tunes.
@Anonymous...
Too funny. The transistor radios with the long antennas?
Great job. Yeah, I was thinking that it is that time of year again. When I think back, I think of the inosense we had along with all the fun. I still like Eastham better than Dennisport, but just being at the Cape is still great.
